The Highlands 'the place of the Gaels is a historic region of Scotland Culturally, the Highlands and the lowlands  diverged from the later Middle ages into the modern period, when lowland scots replaced scottish Gaelic throughout most of the Lowlands.

 

The Highlands stretches from Fort William in the west, right up the coast by Skye, around the North Coast 500 to Durness and John O' Groats in the far north. It also runs up to Inverness and east out to Elgin, taking in Aviemore and some of the Cairngorms National Park

Highland Cattle

Records show that Highland is actually the oldest registered breed in the world, mostly due to the fact that their herd book predates all others.

The Highland  is a Scottish breed of rustic  Cattle It originated in the Scottish Highlands  and the Outer Hebrides islands of Scotland and has long horns and a long shaggy coat. It is a hardy breed, bred to withstand the intemperate conditions in the region.

Dunnottar Castle  "fort on the shelving slope

 is a ruined Medieval fortress   located upon a rocky headland on the northeastern coast of Scotland. about 2 miles south of Stonehaven. The surviving buildings are largely of the 15th and 16th centuries, but the site is believed to have been fortified in the early middle ages  Dunnottar has played a prominent role in the history of Scotland through to the 18th-century Jacobite risings   because of its strategic location and defensive strength.

it is little wonder Eilean Donan castle is now one of the most visited attractions in the Scottish highlands.

As one of the most stunning places of Scotland, Eilean Donan is recognised all around the world. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic scenery,

Eilean Donan Castle dates back to the 13th Century and is undeniably the most photographed castle in Scotland.

Dunrobin Castle is on the east coast of the Northern Highlands overlooking the Moray Firth, just north of the villages of Golspie and Dornoch

The Castle, which resembles a French chateâu with its towering conical spires, has seen the architectural influences of Sir Charles Barry, who designed London’s Houses of Parliament, and Scotland’s own Sir Robert Lorimer.

Ardverikie (the Glenbogle Estate in Monarch of the Glen) is about a 3 mile walk from the Gatehouse ,The Gatehouse itself is beautiful sight in a wonderful location.

Gatelodge is situated by the main entrance to Ardverikie on the banks of the River Pattack. With its fairytale turret and spiral staircase this charming house is a popular choice with couples looking for a romantic break.

Invermoriston’s Thomas Telford bridge crosses the spectacular River Moriston falls. Built in 1813, the bridge was part of the main road between Drumnadrochit and Fort Augustus.

The West Highland Railway  was built to Fort Williams but there were delays with the West Highland Railway Extension as the Tory and Liberal  parties fought over the issue of subsidies for public transport. This Act did pass in 1896
